PRESS RELEASE

UK LEADERS FAIL TO WIN HEARTS AND MINDS
(BUT THEY DO IF THEY TRY)

Britain's leaders are failing to inspire the next generation and struggling to rise to the challenge of today's turbulent times, but a significant percentage with leadership programmes in place do inspire their management

Over a third of all executives and nearly half of junior managers say the quality of leadership in their organisations is poor. Very few junior managers rate their leadership highly, according to new research, Leadership: the challenge for all? launched today by the Institute of Management (IM).

For most organisations, developing leadership skills is still low on the agenda. Yet in those organisations where managers believe leadership potential is developed effectively, consistently and fairly, executives are far more positive about the quality of the leadership - 57 per cent rate it highly in comparison to 21 per cent in other organisations. The research also suggests that these companies are far more likely to report increased turnover during the past three years, than those with no clear development policy.

CSC SURVEY REVEALS INADEQUATE INFORMATION SECURITY PRACTICES AMONG COMPANIES WORLDWIDE

Survey results revealed the following weaknesses among the organizations polled:

  • 46% do not have a formal information security policy in place;
  • 59% do not have a formal compliance program supporting their information systems (IS) function;
  • 68% currently do not regularly conduct security risk analyses or security status tracking.

These findings, focused specifically on information security, are contained in an October addendum to CSC’s 14th Annual Critical Issues of Information Systems Study, a survey of more than 1,000 information technology (IT) executives worldwide completed in August 2001.
